I just found out that a 4GB Sandisk Extreme III 30MB/s Compact Flash card doesn’t work with my old Vosonic XS Drive II VP2060 imagetank. There is no problem with the Extreme III 20MB/s version.

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009Om een indruk te krijgen van de resolutie van een 15Mp camera zoals de Canon 500D in vergelijking tot een 10Mp camera als de Canon 400D heb ik een paar testfoto’s gemaakt. Ik heb hierbij gebruik gemaakt van een 60mm lens en heb de sluitertijd, diafragma en iso waarde gelijk gehouden voor beide camera’s. De instellingen waren ISO 200, f8 en 1/125 seconde. Beide foto’s zijn gemaakt met flitser en vanaf statief. Op beide camera’s heb ik de foto genomen in de hoogste resolutie jpeg. Ik heb de foto van de 400D geschaald naar hetzelfde aantal pixels als de foto van de 500D en vervolgens een 1 op 1 uitsnede gemaakt dus 1 pixel in de camera is 1 pixel in het plaatje hieronder.
Ik zie eigenlijk geen grote verschillen in de resolutie. De foto van de 500D is iets scherper, maar ik had meer verwacht van de 15Mp sensor. Ik heb een goede prime lens gebruikt en ook f8 ingesteld om er zeker van te zijn dat ik in een gunstig gebied zit van deze lens. Als ik het zo zie zul je dus bij de meeste lenzen helemaal geen verschil zien tussen 10 en 15 Mp. Alleen je kaartje in de camera en je harddisk thuis zijn sneller vol.
ICC Color profiles for Canon Cameras
Thursday, July 5th, 2007Most Canon photo cameras are shipped with the Canon Digital Photo Professional software. This program has all the ICC Color Profiles for the different types of Canon cameras. All we have to do is find out which profile is used for each camera type.
How to find the correct ICC profiles
I first described this method in this discussion. To find the correct color profiles for your camera, you must first install Canon Digital Photo Professional. You also need a file monitoring application. I used Filemon but you will probably use its successor Process Monitor
- start Process Monitor
- start Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP)
- See in Process Monitor what files are opened by DPP
- Now open a raw file from your camera in DPP
- See in Process Monitor what ICC files are opened. These are the profiles DPP uses for your camera.
- Now change the picture style in DPP and see what other profiles are used.
- Find the files and use them with UFRaw with Gamma=0.45, Linearity=0.10
ICC Profiles for various Canon cameras
The profile names all have the following form:
- 6131_F.ICC for Faithful Picture Style
- 6131_L.ICC for Landscape Picture Style
- 6131_N.ICC for Neutral Picture Style
- 6131_P.ICC for Portrait Picture Style
- 6131_S.ICC for Standard Picture Style
Where the first four digits are different for the different camera types. 6131 as used above is the profile number for a Canon 400D. The next table shows the profile number for various Canon cameras.

Note: The numbers that have not been confirmed have been marked with a ‘?’. So the standard ICC Color Profile for a Canon 300D is 6031_S.ICC and for a Canon 5D it is 6091_S.ICC.
